Acquired this machine initially in a slightly distressed condition. Thereafter, finding that it was in excellent condition, overall, decided to bring it back to life as a faithful reproduction of the prototype model ’76 which never entered production. In the works shops, employees created what was to become the model ’76 of which one picture is known to exist as published in Roy Bacon’s tome on Nortons. That picture was the inspiration. Refer to it as you compare. That prototype had a slightly different gas tank which was a one-off source unknown. Tank is the original steel Roadster model, with NO filler. The livery is from the prototype.
The rest was subject to my build determination. Internals standard Commando 850 specifications first oversized on bore, .020, with Total Seal piston rings. During construction, cylinder head was reworked for optimal performance. Carburetors are original 32 mm Amal concentrics. K&N filter. New tires: 100/90 19″ front; 120/80 17″ rear. New rear shocks, one inch longer than stock.
